Study: Fewer women taking STEM classes at community colleges


Upstate New York is having a boom in science, technology, engineering and math jobs. But according to a study, fewer women are training for them at community colleges. Our C.J. Spang has details.

Nanoscience Instructor Receives Excellence in Teaching Award

Shana Petermann, Nanoscience faculty at Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Moorhead, Minnesota, was recently honored with the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Award for Excellence in Teaching. The award is based on evidence of teaching excellence and leadership contributions to the college as submitted by professional colleagues and verified and approved by M-State's President's Cabinet. Ms. Petermann teaches the Nano-Biotechnology and Laboratory Instrumentation courses in the Nanoscience Technology Program offered jointly thru MSCTC and NDSCS. Mr. Peterman who is finishing her doctoral work in Molecular Pathogenesis thru NDSU, Veterinary and Microbial Science Department, has been affiliated with the Nanoscience Technology program since its inception.

Dakota County Technical College Instructor Deb Newberry Named to NanoProfessor Advisory Board

NanoInk, Inc., a global technology leader specializing in nanometer-scale manufacturing and applications for the life science and semiconductor industries, selected Deb Newberry to the company's NanoProfessor NanoScience Education Advisory Board. Newberry serves as the director of both the DCTC Nanoscience Technology program and the Midwest Regional Center for Nanotechnology Education, better known as Nano-Link, a consortium of six colleges across five states.

A nuclear physicist versed in research, executive management as well as mechanical and chemical engineering, Newberry advises NanoInk regarding nanotech curricula to students preparing for careers in mushrooming nanotechnology fields.

Offering direct experience building custom-engineered nanoscale structures, the NanoProfessor Education Program is already integrated into the DCTC program.

DCTC Nanotech Student Named National Scholar

John Butenhoff, a student in Dakota County Technical College's Nanoscience Technology program, was named to the 2009 All-USA First Team as part of USA TODAY's All-USA Community College Academic Team as one of only 20 college students in the nation to receive the honor. Butenhoff was honored as a New Century Scholar and received a $2,000 stipend from the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation and the New York Times. He was also recognized at the American Association of Community College's convention in Phoenix.

Butenhoff's leadership contributions included his role as vice president of the college's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. He has also been involved DCTC's Green Campus Commitment, serving on the executive Green Committee. He has served as a ambassador for the Nanoscience Technology program and co-designed the program website. His career path includes transferring to the University of Minnesota and preparing for a career in nanobiotechnology.

North Dakota State College of Science Faculty Member Presents at Two European Nanoscience Conferences

NDSCS Applied Science and Technology's Chair, Michael Burke, Ph.D., presented a paper entitled, "Creating Nanoscience Technicians for the 21st Century Workforce," at two European Nanoscience Conferences this past October. NANONET 2009 was held in Lucerne, Switzerland and NANOSMAT 2009 was held in Rome, Italy. Dr. Burke's paper will be published in the proceedings from each conference. Both talks were well received and stimulated interest in the Joint NDSCS/MSCTC program from colleges as far away as Egypt.
